Mandy is an exceptional new cult classic, A
Nicolas Cage is back with a new indie Grindhouse film called Mandy. It's visually striking, but above all else, Cage gives one of the best performances of his career as he goes on intense rampages throughout the film.
It's one of those films that just makes you think about it after the final scenes, and that's always a good thing. Mandy is a bit slow at first, but the way it's shot and filmed is stunning from the first scene to the last. By the time the cult is introduced, the film quickly picks up the pace and it's no doubt on what time of movie it wants to be. The action in Mandy is well placed, the amount of blood is just right, and even the bad characters are something to be hold. The extreme low budget film is surprisingly one of 2018's best movies for all of these reasons, and much more.
The highlight of Mandy is of course Nicolas Cage. This is by far the most bizarre role Cage has ever played on film, and it's an absolute delight to see him in something as crazy as this. His outbursts that he continues to have throughout the film is like nothing we've ever seen on film before. One can say that no one do revenge like this, and Cage is in fact perfect for the role he's in. He doesn't say much throughout the film, but his actions and the way he expresses his feelings is what true acting is all above. This is pure cult revenge, Nic Cage style.
Another great thing about the film is how newcomer director Panos Cosmotos presents his vision on screen. It's works well because it's different. While it screams low budget, it's a perfect example of how a B- horror flick should be like. The scenes in the woods and how the mountains are represented are unique and awe inspiring. The color in the movie, as well as the intense sound track, come together nicely. They add to the extreme eeriness of the movie.
The movie itself is a piece of art because of the imagery, and besides Nic Cage is what makes Mandy is so good. Every scene of the movie is stunning to look at, especially the house the main characters live in and the surrounding woods. You can tell that each scene was done amazingly well, and took time to shoot.
Mandy is a reminder of the 60 and 70s Grindhouse films that played in theaters across the country. It may be too much for some audiences to handle, but for those willing enough to take things to the next level, this film is right for you.
It's one of the best revenge films in ages and proof that you don't need a lot of budget in order to make a great B horror flick in modern times.
