Flight of the Conchords with vampires? That alone should make any fan of the band or movies interested in the guy's newer vampire flick, featuring all of your favorite Conchords in a completely different, yet original setting. Even if you have no idea who Flight of the Conchords are, What We Do In The Shadows stands perfectly well on it's own as a great new cult classic that will be gaining more and more fans for decades to come.
What makes What We Do In The Shadows so good is that it's a prime example that you don't need lots of money or be a block buster in order to have a sensational film. As the history of their band and HBO shows, Flight of the Conchords know these things very well. And while most great horror flicks usually start out this way with a low budget, What We Do In The Shadows is even different then other indie gems in the genre like Let the Right One In or Shaun of the Dead. It's different because of what these guys did with this film is so unique that they made a near perfect vampire flick.
The biggest thing that works about what We Do In the Shadows are the characters. In the first ten minutes of the film, you love everyone in it, even that creepy old vamp Peter. Each vampire has you rooting for him, and each character is different in his own way. At the end of the film you are sad to see them go, and are wanting more and more. (Thank goodness the movie finally has it's own television show, which may become even greater than Flight of the Conchords).
Another great thing about What We Do In the Shadows is how funny it is. It's a laugh out loud comedy from beginning to end. At the same time, there's part of it that are kind of scary, and sometimes emotional as well. The film has a classic Flight of the Conchords ending that you just have to wait and see for yourself.
Even if you've never seen Flight of the Conchords, or don't know who Jemaine and Bret are, What We Do In the Shadows is a classic vampire film that should be enjoyed by all movie fans.
A+
