Above all is, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is classic Tim Burton. The director puts his signature moves into this film, and halfway through it you can really get the feel for the unusual touch that's seen in many of his previous works like Beetlejuice and Alice in Wonderland. The director seemed to make miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children even weirder then it was, with stunning eye popping visuals that would please most fans of the series.
Unfortunately, the looks might be the only highlight of the film. Unlike classic Tim Burton films like Beetlejuice or Nightmare Before Christmas, Children suffers from extreme lack of narration and story line. Which is unfortunate because the story from Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children is a fascinating one. It feels as if Burton went for all visuals on this one one and hardly anything else.
It almost feels as if the film itself was extremely rushed, leaving out the details that would make it a franchise starter like it was meant to be. For movie goers who are unfamiliar with the books, it might be a bit confusing as to why these children have powers or any of the background information that the film needs to make the plot stronger.
There is some impressive acting and character development, two things which are always successful in Burton films. Eva Green does a wonderful job as Miss Peregrine, but even the scenes with her in them feel rushed. The characters are a reminder of the ones in Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
Despite the suffering plot, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children isn't the worse Burton film, nor is it the best. The side characters could have used a lot more work, and the narration and plot line suffers. Yet, visually the film is a stunning piece of work that is signature Tim Burton, which is what saves Children from being a horrible.
