While it's not an awful super hero flick, Aquaman's extreme cheesy ness makes it hard to compare it to other genre hits that were released earlier this year like Black Panther & Spider-Man.
Impressive special effects can't save Aquaman from being just an alright super hero film. Even acclaimed director and fan favorite Jason Momoa can't save the the movie from becoming cheesy and half hearted. While it's a step up from Justice League, it still gives to show that DC is still unfortunately trying to find their way into a successful Cinematic Universe but continue to having a few draw backs along the way.
Aquaman is more fun than anything else, but at least the film recognizes it's trying to be fun unlike previous DC flicks like Batman Vs Superman. There's some good fight scenes, and simply put Game of Throne's Jason Momoa is perfect for the role. His character and character development in the film is spot on, but unfortunately everything else is a bit luke warm. Even the villains of the film can add some work to their character development and story lines, which is unusual for DC. Usually DC has the best films in the comic universe, but unfortunately that isn't the case with the new Aquaman movie.
The biggest let down of Aquaman is that it's way too cheesy. The love story between Aquaman and Mera is mediocre at best and all the lines are one liners and near duds making you roll your eyes each time their on screen together, which is a bit of a let down. On the other hand, the story behind Nicole Kidman and Patrick Wilson's relationship is a bit better, but it still has it's flaws.
Another fishy thing about Aquaman is that it's way too long, with a near 2 hours and 30 minute run time, with lots of extra scenes that could have been cut or at least edited.
Acclaimed horror director James Wan first attempt at a super hero flick is a major change from the Zack Syder films of the DC universe, and that is actually a step up. It's what makes the film still enjoyable to watch because of the special effects and how they showed Atlantis.
However, unfortunately even the special effects and Wan's director efforts can't save Aquaman from being a bit fishy. DC really needs to take a loot at the Marvel films and understand what works and doesn't work in a super hero movie, because there is so much potential for a successful DC Universe.
