The Favourite is a superb historical film, A+

Newcomer director Yorgos Lanthimo's unique style, combined with stellar performances from its female lead cast make The Favourite one of 2018's best films.

Even though there's no action or blood lust in this film, everything about The Favourite makes it an interesting and fascinating flick from the very first scene to the last. Everything about the movie is done amazingly well, from the direction, to the cinematography and above all else, the acting. Emma Stone is at the top of her game here, and Rachel Weisz along with Olivia Colman give outstanding performances that make The Favourite extremely enjoyable and worth watching just for them.

You can arguably say that Hollywood loves British Queens-in fact just right now there's another film about Queen Mary's conflict with Queen Elizabeth called Mary Queen of Scotts.

Yet, Lonthimo's film is separated from all the others just because of how well done it truly is. His unique touch adds beautiful filming and cinematography, which is a highlight of the movie. The way the movie and the camera shows the Queen's castle and the many rooms within it is artwork just in itself. The landscape around the castle, like the shots in the woods, are all filmed extremely well as well. His vision adds an unique darkness to the film that's unlike some of the other darker historical Hollywood works. This is partly because he actually adds humor throughout the movie. At some points, The Favourite is downright laugh out loud funny which is a brilliant mixture to the darkness and even darker characters that are in the movie.

Above all else though, the best thing about The Favourite are its actresses. Emma Stone fans will be delighted because she gives one of the best performances of her career as Abigail Masham. She breathes life and a fascination into her character that few actresses in today's world can do. It's one of the more unusual roles she's done, but the result proves that Emma Stone is one of the actresses can pull off anything.

Perhaps even outshining Stone in the film os Olivia Colman, who gives an outstanding performance as Queen Anne. The Queen's troubled life and her facial expressions are done so well that it might just be the best acting of the year. Colman was fit incredibly well for the role, and she does it so well it's almost scary throughout the movie. She's an excellent counter part to Stone's amazing performance.

Not to be outdone is Rachel Weisz, who plays Lady Sarah in the movie. Weisz also adds her own unique charm and performance, proving she's on top of her acting game as well.
The Favourite is all about female power, and although all the characters might not be good, they are fascinating to watch. That is what makes a movie about bad characters so good, and it's why The Favourite is one of 2018's best films.
A+
