It may not be as great as Ceasar's Planet of the Apes trilogy, but Kingdom breathes new life into this epic franchise.
Director Wes Bell is no stranger to franchises. His first movies included the Maze Runner trio of films, and now he's back with his own version of Planet of the Apes. It's worth seeing the incredible special effects and cinematography of this movie in IMAX, but the overall story line and characters could use a little improvement.
A fourth movie in a franchise usually is never a good thing, unless your John Wick of course, but Wes manages to succeed in his new Planet of the Apes movie. While it's sort of a reboot of the franchise, there's many references to the previous three films and what happened during these movies. Needless to say, you should watch all previous three Planet of the Apes movies before going into this one: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn and War.
However, this is a new tale filled with all new characters and scenarios, especially since it takes place many years after Caesar's rule. The main ape of the movies does have an interesting background and story line, however, it's the humans of the movie that need much improvement.
Overall, this new film is entertaining, and worth the price of an IMAX admission. It's certainly not as bad as Tim Burton's horrible 2000 Planet of the Apes movie, but not as great as the Andy Serkis trilogy.
