The concert was far from perfect, but despite moments of cold, downpouring rain, and even some snow falling on higher elevation passes, Molly Tuttle gave an electrifying and satisfying performance Friday night at the beautiful The Amp in Vail, Co.
It was a brisk evening last night when The Amp continued it's X-Mountain Game concert series last night with Molly Tuttle, The California Honeydrops and Band of Gringos. It was altogether a great evening filled with incredible musicians and two power house acts that visit Colorado frequently even though both California Honeydrops and Molly Tuttle are originally from California. The highlight of the evening, whether it was a good one or not, was Molly Tuttle bringing to the stage her all female band for the first time.
"I'm so nervous and excited," Molly explained to the crowd about her first show with the group. It was a good time to see Molly and the new group. With a brand new single just being released, and a future album coming out in August, the girls were incredibly nice and fresh and full of energy. Each one did well throughout the evening, perhaps highlighted by fiddle and mandolin player Maer Myers who matched Molly's incredible guitar playing well.
The group played at least half a dozen new songs from the new album, however, it was nice to hear some old time favorites thrown into the set list like 'Doolitle's Farm', 'El Dorado', and 'Alice in the Bluegrass.' along with Molly's signature cover of 'She's a Rainbow.'
However, for those who have seen Molly Tuttle & The Golden Highway, it was a surprise to see drums, electric guitar and an electric base. Even Molly herself played electric guitar for a few songs. This added an entirely new element and sound that everyone loves to hear. Unfortunately, gone are the days of Molly's amazing banjo playing skills, but it's now obvious she is moving towards more of an Americana and even rock n roll experience with this new band.
The crowd was also and pumped up for the opening group, The California Honeydrops, who have a large following in the state and play Colorado as much as Molly Tuttle. Their big band with two drummers and two saxophonists were a great paced blues that got everyone pumped up for Molly and surprisingly almost played as long as Molly.
Even though the concert went until 11pm last night, Molly's new group only played for around 1 hour and 30 minutes. For most shows that's a good amount of time, but for those use to experiencing Molly perform for over two hours with Kyle Tuttle and the gang could be a bit disappointed.
The sound was great at The Amp, and the 2,000 seat outdoor venue is a great place to see concerts in the summer because it has a covered roof, especially when it rains.
Molly Tuttle will be performing with her new all girl band again in Denver, and one last time with The Golden Highway at Rockygrass Festival in Lyons, CO at the end of July this summer.
