Lucinda Williams and her band perform at the Swallow Hill Music Hall in Denver, B

Last week on the night before Halloween, alternative country icon Lucinda Williams performed with her band at Denver's Swallow Hill Music Hall. The show was sold out months in advance, and the small venue only sold around 260 tickets for an unique show.

All the nearby homes and houses were filled with Halloween decorations, but this was a mature and older crowd that was there for the music and not the holiday. This made perfect sense being that Lucinda Williams herself is 73 years old. However, that did not stop her from performing two sets with no opening act and only her band at the Swallow Hill Music Hall.

The crowd was very into the music and loved it, cheering and encouraging Lucinda when she commented on how old she was and that she may not 'have it' anymore. Unfortunately, despite the crowd and Lucinda's own enthuisiasm, these affects were pretty obvious throughout the show. Lucinda had a stroke in 2020 and the affects were still apparent. She needed assistance walking to the stage at the beginning of the show, and used a screen monitor to read her own lyrics. She also sat down for the second half of her show, but at 73, who can really blame her?

Lucinda told many stories about how each one of her songs came to be, including her top hits she played "Drunken Angel" and "Car Wheels On The Gravel Road." It was greating hearing the inspiration behind these classic hits.

Her back up band was great, lead by guitarists Doug Sutton and Marc Ford along with Bassist David Sutton, who has been playing with her for over 20 years.

Despite her aging appearance, The Swallow Hill Music Hall was a great place to see someone like Lucinda Williams. The small venue had superb sound and even though the crowd was also older, everyone was into it and were enjoying themselves, and that is all that really matters. Lucinda Williams is one of those iconic musicians that if your a fan, you should be supporting her and seeing her, and it's not too often to see somoene on her calibar in such a small venue like Swallow Hill.
