Although this was our first time attending Monte Vista's Rhythms on the Rio Festival, it was by far the best festival experience we had this year for many reasons.
1) Smaller crowd
When you imagine a music festival, you think thousands upon thousands of people, crowded lines, and a zero percent chance to be close to the main stage. If you are close to the same main stage, you have to camp out all day to get there. While this is true for many festivals and even other Colorado medium sized ones, it isn't the case for this incredible festival in Monte Vista. Around 2,000 people attend the 3-day festival onside the river, and that's a perfect amount for everyone in attendance to truly enjoy and be close to both stages at the festival.
2) Superb care for media and artists
At Rhythms on the Rio, the festival really takes great care of everyone working and being involved in the festival that's not seen at other events in the state. The food, drinks and chance to communicate with all of the artists performing at the festival backstage is an incredible experience that's not to be missed.
3) Great camping experience
Along with the festival, the camping experience on the festival grounds are not to be missed. Most of the sites are within easy walking distance to the festival gates, and surprisingly, it's not too hard to actually get a good night's rest.
4) Chance to see bigger acts on smaller stages
Some pretty big name acts have appeared at Rhythms on the Rio throughout the year, and it's always great being able to see such artists in a small secluded festival environment. This past year in 2025, Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country performed an amazing two set night closing out the festival which was a sight not to be missed. Pixie also brought several guest musicians to perform during her set which was one of the best concert moments of the year.
5) Location
The location of the festival is one for the books in the magical San Louis Valley. If you want a break from the festival and want to take a hike, all you have to do is drive an hour or so away to the Sand Dunes and if you want seclusion, a trip to the San Louis Peak area which isn't too far away either.
