Chilling Adventures of Sabrina S1 brings the magic, B+

While it may not be the best series Netflix has ever done, the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina introduces new and old concepts to a beloved show and the comics.

There's one thing everyone can agree on with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: it's downright chilly! Its filled with weirdness that only a new show about witches can do, and it's something new and exciting that other dark arts movies and films haven't really done before. Perhaps the best thing about the new show is the main character herself, who's wonderfully played by breakout actress Kiernan Shipka. Shipka introduces her own brilliance and magic to the show that keeps it a float. Sometimes one might be convinced to watch the show just because of her and how she plays Sabrina.

There's much to both love and to question about the first season of Sabrina. One of the best things about the show is how beautiful it is to look at. Sabrina's home, and the woods around it, are done exceptionally well, almost perfect. Shots of the house throughout the series adds to the chilling of the show in a great way, because it's something new and exciting that even the old show missed out on. The new Sabrina greatly improves over the 90s sit com, and what's great about is all the original characters are still there. Sabrina's Aunte's are wonderfully played, and there's even that beloved cat-Salem which actually has his own moments of the show.

But much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, another good thing the show is Sabrina's relationship with her 'human' boyfriend and High School friends. They may not be the Scooby Gang, nor are the characters as strong as Buffy, but in time they may be.

Sabrina's also funny at times, which provides a good mixture to the suspense and sometimes scarier moments of the show.
Sabrina is far from perfect. Although some parts of the show are original, there's others that are copying from some of the great horror flicks before it. Pans Labyrinth can be seen throughout the show, as well as almost exact scene by scene shot from the Evil Dead movies. The show can be a bit confusing sometimes-it states that it takes place in modern times, but everything about the show looks and feels like it's the 1960s or 70s.

Aside from that, and the show being some what slow at times, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a mostly successful and a highly entertaining new demon/witch show that will hopefully stick around for a few more seasons.
B+
