The best movies of 2020

After a long break, were finally back at Wildfire Reviews. Great apologies! Were back with what we believe are the top 10 movies of this past year.  COVID running rampage lead to an impressive amount of smaller scale movies becoming more well known and talked about. Enjoy our list!

1) The Invisible Man-RT Score: 91%
In modern movie times, most horror movie remakes usually let movie goers turn a head and are usually worse than their original. However, newcomer director Leigh Whannell's the Invisible Man is a modern horror masterpiece. It's not only the best film of 2020, but has some impressive performances lead by Handmade Tail's Elisabeth Moss. The pace, writing and filmography are all great as well. The Invisible Man is an edge of your seat thriller that lives up to how great the original film was, while an adding a neat modern twist.

2) Soul-RT Score: 95%

It's one of the best films of the now lengthy Pixar catalog. Pixar's Soul is completely brilliant with fascinating visuals and characters. Leave it to Pixar to create something new and original in today's often swamped movie genres. Soul is unlike anything we've seen before. The visuals are the highlight here, but what makes Soul great is it's overall message and story line. It's an animated film that both younger children and adults will love. It's surprisingly very emotional, and half way through the film you'll fall in love with its unusual and bizarre characters.

3) His House-RT Score: 100%

One of the best reviewed films of 2020, His House proves that modern horror flicks can be just as good as some of the ones that were being produced in the 70s and 80s, if not better. While in the same category, His House is a different type of horror than Invisible Man. Rather than depending on jump scares to draw audiences in, His House is more if a suspense thriller than anything else. It's a new twist in the over saturated haunted house genre, and every horror fan should check out this highly entertaining flick.

4) News of the World-RT Score 88%

A fresh take on the western genre, Tom Hanks is of course great in his new film, News of the World. While it's a bit on the slow side, when it picks up pace the film is a fascinating look at what life might have been like after the cold war in Texas country. Newcomer actress Helena Zengel does a great job opposite Tom Hanks, but the films highlights are the direction, storyline and incredible cinematography.

5) One Night In Miami-RT Score: 98%

Director Regina King is in full force in her newest film. One Night In Miami is an incredibly, extremely face paced and super emotional film that highlights some of the best actors in the movie business today. The unusual play like atmosphere of the film makes it different than all the other films of 2020 we've watched. However, the highlight of One Night in Miami is the brilliant acting lead by Kingsley Ben Adir as Malcolm X. The performances in the film, and directing, is what makes One Night in Miami so unique.

6) Ma Rainey's Black Bottom-RT score-98%
Similar to One Night In Miami in several ways, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is another film of 2020 that centers around incredible performances and directing. While it's a bit slower than ONIM, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is fascinating none the less. It's an incredible look at what life was like in the 1920s in Chicago for blues musicians. What's best about the film are the performances lead by Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, who was robbed of an oscar.

7) Nomadland-RT score 94%

While not the best film of 2020, Nomadland is truly unique in several ways. The directing of the film is some of the best you'll see in modern times, directed by relatively newcomer Chloe Zhao. The female lead film also has impressive cinematography, but the best thing about it by far is the incredible performance by oscar winner  Frances McDormand.

8) Sound of Metal-RT score: 97%

Sound of Metal is highlighted by Riz Ahmed performance as a metal musician who becomes deaf. Olivia Cook also does a great acting job in the film. The movie has a solid story that will keep you interested from the very first scenes to the last, however it's unusual topic might not be for everyone. While it might be one of the more under looked films of the year, Sound of Metal is perhaps one of the more important.

9) Enola Holmes-RT score 91%

Overlooked by both the golden globes and oscars, Enola Holmes was one of Netflix's best films of 2020. The new movie is an unusual twist on the Sherlock Holms genre. The movie's fast pace, storyline and sense of adventure is what makes it one of the better flicks of the year.

10) Birds of Prey-79% RT Score.

Any other year an under dog DC film probably wouldn't make the list of best films, but because of the lack of films this past year, DC's Birds of Prey has managed to sneak into our list. This is mostly due to Margot Robbie's great performance as Harley Quinn. She steals the movie, and is no doubt a new force in the DC universe. The film itself is much better than the first Suicide Squad, and has an interesting storyline with villains and anti hero characters fans will love.
