This past Saturday night, October 21, 2023, Molly Tuttle performed with her bluegrass band The Golden Highway to a sold-out show at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO. The result was an electrifying performance that proved to the best concert of the year for many reasons.
It was an exciting Saturday night this past weekend with bluegrass titans Molly Tuttle & The Golden Highway. They performed at one of Denver's smaller venues, Cerventes, who's general admission room holds around 1,000 people. That night it was a sold-out show with a long line to get into the concert, and the ballroom was packed from the beginning of the concert to the end. Despite it being packed, the ballroom sounded absolutely perfect for both Molly Tuttle and opening act Cristina Vane. The acoustics were great, and every instrument was heard extremely well throughout the night.
Both Molly and Cristina expressed their love for Colorado throughout their sets, despite being from Nashville. Cristina especially seemed glad to be back. Her beauty, both musically and physically, shown throughout her set as she performed on stage with just herself and two guitars. Even though she didn't have a band, it was a good warm up for Molly, especially when she invited several members of the Golden Highway on stage near the ending of her set. Cristina became emotional towards the end since it was the last night of her tour with Molly, and it showed how much she respected her and enjoyed being on the tour.
However, it was clear everyone was there to see Molly, and when she finally came on stage around 9:20, everyone was cheering and hollering. It was great seeing the young newcomer bluegrass band together on stage with members Dominick Leslie, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Shelby Means and of course Kyle and Molly Tuttle all together and feeling ecstatic on a Saturday evening. The band even remarked several times through their set how stoked and excited they were to be back in Denver for their last night of the Golden Highway Tour. The band even seemed to have a bit of humor to them when Kyle and Molly set the straight on how they have the same last name since it may have been received differently over the summer when they performed in Colorado last. 'I know we've been called siblings and husband and wife. We're a bonified bluegrass band, can't it be a little bit of both?' Banjo player Kyle Tuttle remarked halfway through their set.
The entire setlist and tour focused on the group's new album, The Golden Highway. The crowd seemed to love every bit of it and sang along to mostly all of her songs she performed. The group performed hit single 'El Dorado' the second song of the set which proved to be a great warm up for the rest of the evening. However, the highlight of the evening was when the group switched into their 'witchgrass' version of the set and performed their version of Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit', which got the crowd up and going more so than any other moment.
Throughout the night, each member of the group had their shining moments, but it was clear from the beginning that the very end that fiddler player Bronwyn Hynes stole the show. The two-time fiddle award player was exceptional, and her solos sounded absolutely amazing in the small venue.
At the end of the night, Molly seemed extremely humble expressing how her hair fell out at age three and then she took off her wig and performed 'Crooked Tree' with a handful of other older songs. It was an emotional but great close out to her near two-hour performance.
For only being a band for a year and a half, Molly Tuttle & The Golden Highway are a force to be reckoned with and to keep an eye on in the near future for years to come.
