Although it wasn't a perfect concert, (few concerts ever are) southern blues sisters Rebecca and Megan Lowell gave Denver's Odgen Theater their all for an hour and half performance this past Friday night.
Spring is in the air and the flowers are already blooming, according to Larkin's Poe's stage set. The two sisters are obvious flower girls, with several introduction songs references blooming wildflowers as they began their set. Dressed in matching jean outfits, the sisters had no trouble at all adapting to the full room at Odgen Theater Friday night. It was a good show, with only a few drawbacks.
The sisters began their rocking set with 'Nowhere Fast' and performed their new album 'Bloom' in its entirety. The new songs that night was spectacular great live, and Rebecca and Lowell no doubt spent many nights of practice to perform these new songs to perfection. Most of the new tunes added a great rock n roll jibe to the show. They performed both 'Easy Love Parts 1 & 2', along with some of the new record's signature hits like 'Little Bit' and 'Mockingbird'. Although both sisters were great performing the new songs, it was really Megan Lowell who truly shined the most, gracing the stage with her incredible slide guitaring skills with nearly every one of the new hard rocking tunes.
However, Rebecca had some fantastic moments too, announcing to everyone that she has a baby on the way.
One of the highlights of the entire show was when the group played several songs acoustic, and Rebecca actually began to play the mandolin. "We were actually a bluegrass group in our beginning days, so were going to strip down with only one microphone for the next few songs," Rebecca explained. It was incredible watching Larkin Poe play some of the older songs this way, especially 'Mad as a Hatter'.
The best moments of the evening were when they performed rocking versions of 'Bad Spell' and 'Bolt Cutters and the Family Name'.
The set list was heavy with songs from the last two records, including both 'Bloom and 'Blood Harmony'. Another highlight of the show was much energy both sisters had, and that was of course due for the event being only the 3rd date of the entire tour. They were fresh and ready to rock.
However, the concert wasn't perfect. The show was only an hour and half long, which was a bit shorter than usual. The last time we reviewed Larkin Poe they performed almost a two-hour set. The concert was more focused on more of their rock and roll and bluegrass side of the group. Unfortunately, the set didn't include too much of their traditional blue's songs. The set list missed some of their most iconic songs like 'Beach Blonde Bottle Blues'. Despite this, they were still and always will be fantastic live and absolutely worth going to.
