This past Friday night, country icon Lukas Nelson performed at Denver's historic Paramount Theater to a dressed up crowd on Halloween. Both Lukas Nelson and his band along with opening act, Loula, also dressed up for Halloween, providing a fun and charming experience for everyone. While the entire show was far from perfect, Lukas's new band sounded great, as well as the openers.
"We had a great idea where we would dress up as cranberries for Halloween and sing the song Linger." explained the opening group which is exactly what they did for their first song. "Tonight were The Cranberries," they joked. The two piece group was only a singer and acoustic guitar player, but they managed to get the crowd going a bit for Luke and mostly everyone showed up early to listen to them at the Paramount.
Lukas Nelson and his new band 'the powder puffs," he joked, also dressed up as Revolutionary War characters, which went with the territory.
Despite the crowd being a bit older, half of the folks there were also dressed up. There were lots of vampires, witches and ghouls in the attendance Friday evening, but only two cranberries.
The near 2,000 seat venue wasn't sold out for Luke, but the crowd was more than energetic, dancing and standing up for most of his show. Because it was an older crowd, most folks were there simply because the main act is of course, Willie's son.
However, Luke performed all of his songs throughout his 1 hour and 40 minute songs. Even though he has a new album out and new band, most of his set list included older songs from his first few records with the Promise of the Real, which is amazing to hear. A highlight of his set included his own version of Paul Simon's 'Crazy After All Of These Years'.
Sometimes the show did drag on a little bit towards the middle and ending parts, and unfortunately neither band decided to change their setlist for Halloween despite the openers performing 'Linger'. It would have been nice to hear some 'spooky' songs for the holiday, how about some 'Werewolves of London?' anyone? But, the sound sounded great in the historic 95 year old theater and it was a great venue to hold Willie's son. It was also fun seeing the crowd and bands dress up for Halloween!
