Band of Horses perform at the Surf Hotel in Buena Vista on December 30, 2024
A blast from the past happened on Monday night when Band of Horses rocked out an intimate small 300-person venue in downtown Buena Vista.
This Monday night, veteran indie rockers Band of Horses performed at an incredibly small venue to help bring in the New Years in Buena Vista, CO. This was the town's biggest show of 2024, except for perhaps the Billy Strings Festival that occurs every September. The show quickly sold out despite a hefty price of $135.00 for a ticket, but that didn't stop fans from showing up. Once Band of Horses took the stage, it was like a mini-Lollapalooza inside the small venue.
With all the guitars, drums and base it was loud, but there were of course some great acoustics. This is one of the reasons what made the show Monday night great, you could hear every instrument of the band incredibly well which was a good change of pace from the opening act. Ben Bridwell's lead vocals were spot on, and he did not miss a beat the entire night.
"This is our first time in Buena Vista," the lead singer proclaimed, correctly pronouncing the town's name. There aren't too many concert halls in town, so it's a no surprise that this was the band's first time there. It was an incredible opportunity to see a band that usually plays big music festivals in a small venue, and everyone there was because of that reason.
Surprisingly most of the crowd was in their 40s or older, a comment the opening band joked about saying how it looked like everyone in the sold-out crowd had kids. Yet, Band of Horses first two records came out when most of the crowd was in their college days, including this reviewer.
The band opened up with crowd favorite 'The Great Salt Lake', followed by 'Is There a Ghost'. An hour of half later filled with songs spanning their career and their last record, they closed of course with 'The Funeral'. What was missing was 'The First Song', but even so, it was a great night to remember. The band performed without an encore but played a solid 1 hour and 45-minute set which was well worth the ticket price for the fans who attended and a great way to kick off New Years week.
