This weekend, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band performed a near three our concert at Beaver Creek's beautiful 530 seat Vilar Performing Arts Center to a sold-out crowd.
Lyle Lovett & His Large Band performed for an amazing 7th time Saturday night at the Vilar Performing Arts Center. The venue holds nearly 530 seated people and has an incredible sound system, a perfect place for a big band with lots of instruments to perform like Lyle Lovett.
It wasn't a perfect concert Saturday night but watching Lyle Lovett perform at such a small venue is a treat for anyone. Adding to the fact the incredible sound system of the theater, and you simply can't go wrong with a group like Lyle Lovett. Lyle had around a dozen musicians on stage, including an impressive horn section, a steel guitarist, electric guitarist and acoustic guitarist, keyboardist, base player and an incredible piano player. All of these musicians were great, but the standout performances of the evening were from backup singer Amy, several piano solos and saxophone solos that hit the theater like a wall of sound.
The sound is so perfect at the venue you can hear a penny drop in the audience.
67-year-old Lyle Lovett himself was good and performed a number of hits throughout the evening, including his iconic 'If I had a Boat' towards the end of the set list. If you've never been to a Lyle Lovett show, you get half performances, and a half comedy show and lots of talking. Lyle loves to talk, which is both a good and bad thing. Some can say that he may even talk too much at his shows, but the added comedy element is nice and had the crowd chuckling along.
The biggest drawback of the show was how much Lyle spoke, which was a lot in between songs. The show was almost also a bit too long, as some concerts can be perfect with a solid two hours.
Despite that, the perfect sound made up for the nights drawbacks. There is a reason why Lyle keeps coming back to the Vilar, and that is clearly one of them.
The legendary Lyle Lovett is absolutely worth watching live but seeing him with his large band is always a bonus.
