Although we enjoyed watching James Gunn new Superman on the big IMAX screen, it's still miles behind of what is by far the best live action Superman that's ever graced the small or big screen-Superman & Lois.
Wildfire Reviews doesn't normally post reviews like this, but for those of you that know us, you know Superman is our favorite all time hero. With growing up watching endless episodes of Smallville with college friends, we know the Superman story in and out. Which is why it was emotional for us to watch Jame's Gunn big blue boy scout on the big screen, and why we think it may not be the best Superman that's out there.
Let's be honest, it's great to see the big blue boy scout on the main in a whole new movie for a generation of newer fans. (And Krypto is the scene stealer, here!) It's incredibly different than the past two live action Superman's we've seen: a darker more serious version with Zack Snyder's trilogy, and the more family orientated Superman & Lois. The new movie embraces Superman's biggest power: goofy ness. The film is corky in more ways than one, especially Lois Lane's and Clark Kent's relationship.
If you really want to dive into some true Superman villains, great acting, and a more serious story-you may want to binge the four seasons of CW's Superman & Lois. It's the best live action Superman ever to date for many reasons, but let's nail down a few of them:
- The fourth season: the final season of the show introduces both Lex Luther and Doomsday and each has incredible emotional effects on the characters. It's also by far the best live action version of Doomsday we've ever seen, which maybe the highlight of the entire show itself. Even though you have to stick around for the fourth season to watch them, it's worth it for seeing this version of the big bad ugly live action. The show's Lex Luthor is also a scene stealer in every episode.
- The best Clark Kent & Lois Lane: the new Superman movie is well, all about Superman, which doesn't really focus too much on comic book's biggest romance" Clark Kent & Lois Lane. However, Clark & Lois really shine true to their characters in the show, and they are by the far the best actors that have ever played them. Both Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch are spectacular as CK and LL in every season, but especially when Lois develops cancer further on into the show.
- The Superboys: Another great thing about the show is that they introduce new characters: Johnathon and Jordyn Kent, who eventually develop superpowers on their own (Spoiler Alert!). However, how the show manages all the teenage drama is on par with Smallville, and it's a reminder of how great that show once was.
- It's a Superman show: While Jame's Gunn new movie is all about Superman, it's no doubt also about other heroes and is here to introduce an entire new universe. Let's be honest, Smallville had this issue too with introducing all of DC's other heroes in the show, except Batman. Superman & Lois is great because it focuses just on their relationship and no other major DC heroes. Although it started out in the Arrowverse, it clearly became its own thing, which is why it's so great.
If you want to see a new version of Superman on the big screen, you won't be disappointed in the new James Gunn movie. But if you want to dig more into what Clark Kent is really like, watch Superman & Lois instead.
