This past Wednesday night, jam-electronic group Sound Tribe Sector 9 performed for the very first time in Buena Vista, CO at the Surf Hotel for two nights. We weren't able to cover the 2nd night, but the 1st night was a jamming good time out on the Lawn, which is always a fun time experiencing live music for an outdoor concert in the small mountain town.
The enclosed Lawn area outside of Surf Hotel holds around 1,000 people. On Wednesday night, it was nearly jam packed with around 800 concert attendees. Many of whom were excited to see tribe perform the following night at an even smaller venue inside the Surf Hotel that holds just over a few hundred folks. However, Wednesday night was still an intimate experience with a popular jam band at a smaller venue. The sound and lights were fantastic throughout the evening. At some points it was almost too loud, but groups like STS9 always hold lots of bass when they perform live.
The crowd was mostly younger and a good mixture of male and female attendees. Everyone in the crowd was dancing all night when STS9 started around 7am, and dancing continued until the group left 3 hours later. the nearby Willow Fire with smoke and bad air quality did not stop the crowd going out and enjoying themselves. STS9 seems to have a very dedicated fan following, we spoke to two gentlemen that said this was their 99th tribe show, and tomorrow night would be their 100th. Lots of folks were coming out of town for the event, including people driving from Taos and Durango.
The entire set was near 3 hours long with a small 5 minute break and an encore, of course. Every member of STS9 performed well and the setlist was great Wednesday night. This was our first time seeing and reviewing STS9. One of the highlights of the night was their light show, and the lasers didn't disappointed. It was an unique experience for fans of the band to see the group up close, personal and at such a small venue. STS9 normally headlines large jam festivals and performs at Red Rocks every year, which is a much bigger venue.
