Veteran bluegrass jam band Greensky Bluegrass performed on both Friday and Saturday this past weekend at the Vail Amp. It was a hell raising good time with the five piece group, who were joined by Hollie Bowling on Friday the 7th.
Although both nights were exceptional with Greensky, night number one couldn't have been beat because piano player Hollie Bowling joined the band for a legendary set at the Amp. "We just let Hollie decide the set list for tonight," Greensky chimed in after a good hour or so into their set Friday. Hollie was beyond exceptional at keys, and every time she began a solo the crowd cheered. She was by far the highlight of both nights, although she only performed for night number one.
Hollie proved she could keep up with the fast paced bluegrass pickers of Greensky, matching every banjo and guitar note with her own keys. Hollie rarely joins the band onstage, so when she does, it's always a special experience.
The crowd both nights were a good mixture of young and old fans, with the majority of them being elderly. It wasn't sold out, but that didn't stop Greensky from performing their iconic lengthy sets. Both nights the band performed for over three hours, and with typical jam band fashioned, even played past their 10pm curfew.
The second night included the band performing such iconic songs like "Kerosene", "Demons" and "Love will not Change". Although it was just the five piece band all evening Saturday, they kept it going at their own pace and each member's legendary solos, minus Hollie of course. There also seemed to be a bit more in attendance Saturday night of course being the weekend, and the weather turned out a bit better than the rain on Friday.
Greensky is no doubt a jammy bluegrass band. Each song they perform is well over ten minutes, but every moment includes a dazzling performance from one of the members of the band. The group played three hour sets both Friday and Saturday night at the Amp, which is long enough for any group. This was one of the group's only summer non festival Colorado appearance, which they apparently skipped Red Rocks this year since usually that is where they typically play annually.
Overall, the light show, music and atmosphere was a typical Greensky crowd and event, with many audience members having seem them over 20 times. It was well worth it, especially if you were a die hard fan of the band, but newcomers might be a bit dismayed and probably do no not need to see the group two nights in a row-one night is just fine.
