This year has been an incredible year for television, both live action and animation. We now list the 10 best shows of the year. (Please note these are the series we've seen, some may not be included that we haven't watched).
1) The Penguin, Miniseries, MAX
Matt Reeves The Penguin is hand down the best television show of the year, anchored by incredible performances by both Colin Ferrell and Cristin Millioti. While Colin does an amazing job as the main character and gangster Oz Cobb, Cristin Millioti is a showstopper as Safia Falcone, providing some of the best acting on the small screen in years. The Penguin offers a new, intriguing look to Gotham that Reeves does well in style in every episode, ultimately paving way for the next The Batman movie and truly expanding this new universe.
2) Interview with the Vampire, Season 2, AMC
The second season of Interview with the Vampire was even better than the first, if that were possible. The acting, story line, scenery and visuals were all nothing short of amazing as the show left New Orleans and traveled to Paris. The acting in the series by everyone involved is nothing short of incredible, but who really stole the show in the second series was newcomer Delainey Hayles as vampire teenager Claudia, and Assad Zaman as Rashid. We are excited for how things ended and for the third season with the return of a reformed Lestat.
3) Shogun, Season 1, Hulu
Shogun is no doubt listed and has won multiple awards as the best television show of 2024 for many good reasons. It was an incredible remake of the original series, expanding the Japanese characters in great detail. The acting was incredible, but what really stood out in this show was the attention to detail and the incredible scenery and cinematography that left audiences gripping for another episode, despite some of them being a bit slower than usual.
4) X-Men 97, Season 1, Disney Plus
In what was perhaps the best marvel series to be released on Disney Plus, X-Men 97 was a true reincarnation of the 90s animated X-Men series. This show is braver, faster and better than the original series in every single way. It gives light to all of the X-Men characters, including a surprised good version of Magneto. The animation is some of the best we've seen in any series to date, rivaling that of Arcane. This is perhaps the best X-Men release of all time and absolutely worth digging into if you're a superhero fan of any kind.
5) Silo, Season 2, Apple Plus
The second season of Silo introduces more mysteries while answering only a handful of questions, as great science fiction series should. It truly expands this fascinating universe and characters, especially Tim Robbins as the mayor of the Silo. However, this is Rebbecca Furguson's show, and while her character sort of takes a sidestep in season 2, she is now doubting still a powerful acting Prescence throughout the show.
6) Fallout, Season 1, Amazon Prime
Another post apocalypse series that was released this year was Amazon's Fall Out. While it has similar concepts to Silo, this show is more fun, crazier and more video game like than ever. The show did incredibly well bringing the video game series to modern life, providing a fascinating look at the wasteland. Who stole the show was the main character and her performance who was played by Ella Purnell. It was also great seeing a show where you don't have to watch the video games to understand it, and we are all looking forward to season 2.
7) The Legend of Vox Machina, Season 3, Amazon Prime
While the 3rd season of Machina isn't as great as the other 2, this is still one of the best amazon prime shows out there. All the main characters show interesting development in the 3rd season, especially Pike and Scanlan. But what really comes to shine in the 3rd season are the villains and most specifically, the Dragons. Amazing animation continues to propel this show forward as one of the greatest animated series of all time, and you certainly don't have to be a D&D fan to love it.
8) Arcane, Season 2, Netflix
Arcane is still great in the second season, but something seems to be missing from what made the first season show incredible. The animation is still incredible, as well as all of the characters, but the story line seems to be a bit forced at times, as if the show runners are trying to ram things together for one final season instead of making several more. While it's true some shows try to end the note earlier on, but Arcane is one of those shows who should have been expanded to several more series.
9) Agatha All Along, Season 1, Disney Plus
One of the better Marvel shows that has been released in recent years was Agatha All Along. It was especially interesting because it didn't really follow the usual Marvel plotlines with a hero and a villain but instead focused on witchcraft and Agatha Harkness's character. Kathryn Hayn truly shines as our antihero in every episode, and you can tell she was having really fun playing the character. Hopefully we can see more of Agatha in future Marvel movies.
10) What We Do in the Shadows, Season 6, Hulu
What We do in the Shadows was once an incredible show. All of the previous 5 seasons were some of the best vampire comedy materials ever created, but somehow, they managed to miss a few beats in it's final season. The jokes aren't as funny and the characters show almost no sign of development, but that's because they are perhaps ending the show in the season. It's still a good show with some funny moments, but they've truly seemed to run out steam in its final season, perhaps suggesting it should have ended a season earlier.
Kaos, Season 1, Netflix
Creature Commandos, Season 1, HBO
