We are on full force with completing our best of 2025 lists, and now we break down what we believe are the best television series, both new and returning series of the year. Lots of animated shows make up this year's best of. This list is of course catered to the series we've seen over this year, so not everything is included. Enjoy!
1) The Mighty Nein
Everyone loved The Legend of Vox Machina, which just happens to be this reviewer's favorite television series of all time. Now the creators of the show have returned with all new series that dare we say might be even BETTER than their original show, although Machina has three seasons to date. The Mighty Nein is filled with the stunning animation and fight sequences that brought The Legend of Vox Machina to justice. It also has incredible new characters that we can all cheer for that made the original show so classic. It's no doubt the best show of 2025.
2) Dexter: Resurrection
When a new season of Dexter was announced, many shrugged it off, even die hard fans said, "Is Dexter ever going to end?". The original show ended on a sour note, and Dexter New Blood was only halfway decent, although it did introduce Dexter's son who has a key part in the new season. What everyone didn't expect was how exceptional Dexter: Resurrection would be. It turns out it's the best of Dexter since the first and second seasons of the original show. It's a true return to form for the show, and it doesn't help it has Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklarge (Game Of Thrones) who both have some pretty great scene stealing performances.
3) Severance, Season 2
Everyone's favorite science fiction drama on Apple Plus returned with a stunning sophomore season that's just as good if not better than the first. Introducing some stunning new ideas for the show, the series is filled with stunning acting from everyone involved, especially the lead actors Adam Scott and Britt Lower. The second season turns the show more science fiction than before and expands the world of Severance to satisfying results.
4) Invincible, Season 3
The best series of Invincible returned this year with incredible storytelling, amazing character development and superb animation. Invincibles' character and arc between Eve was a highlight throughout the series. There were some also truly epic fight scenes in this season, especially towards the end. It was the most groundbreaking season of Invincible yet!
5) Common Side Effects
Another great animation show debuted on HBO from the creators of Scavengers Reign, which already has a cult following only after a few years of being on air and is considered one of the best science fiction shows of all time. So we no doubt knew Common Side Effects was going to be good, but it turns out the show was more than good-it was great. Introducing a stunning new world and characters we can all love and appreciate, especially the main antagonist, Common Side Effects is a compelling new thriller that we hope will be returning for a second season.
6) Peacemaker, Season 2
Peacemaker returned with it's second season this year, and the James Gunn created show is better than ever. Every episode is great, and we even have more fun with Eagley in this season than the previous one. Peacemaker fits well with the new DCUE universe, and Gunn is doing a great job with it. The acting and storylines are great, but perhaps the best reason to watch Peacemaker is the opening dance credit scenes of every episode!
7) Pluribus
Apple Plus is no stranger to science fiction, having released some of the best sci fi shows the past dozen years on any network. They continue this thread with this year's brand new Pluribus from the creators of Breaking Bad. The result is an electrifying end of the world thriller drama series that's highlighted by Rhea Seehorn's stunning performances in every episode. It's a show not to be missed, and although it has some 'Last Man On Earth' vibes, it's very much it's own end of the world thriller.
8) Andor, Season 2
Andor returned with it's second and final season at the beginning part of the year, and the result was a season that is even better than the first one, if possible. Andor is for everyone that doesn't like Star Wars or Disney. It truly set's it apart from the other Star Wars shows out there, and one just has to watch it to understand why. Incredible acting, special effects and cinematography and above all great storytelling make Andor the best Star Wars show to date.
9) Alien: Earth
While the alien tv show might not be as good as the Predator movies that were released this year, it was the franchise's first move onto the small screen. The result is a surprisingly good mixture of science fiction and horror elements that made the original films so great. Interesting set pieces and characters make this a solid entree into the Alien franchise, and but we suggest watching the recent alien movies before digging yourself into this series!
10) Harley Quinn: Season 5
Harley Quinn was back this year with it's fifth (and possible final) season. It was a true reformation of the show back to it's original routes, with everyone's favorite lovers-Harley Quinn and Poison Ivey moving to Metropolis instead of the show's original setting in Gotham. Amazing storylines and superb animation, including a twisted take on everything DC's Superman-made Harley Quinn's last one of the better of the past seasons.
